About me

Hello! I'm Dana Okumura, an artist (when I'm not teaching English) from America, living in Nagoya, Japan.

If you're here, you're probably interested in abstract art. As likely a lot of other abstract painters feel, I struggle with imposter syndrome. "Is my art really good enough for other people to want to buy?" is what I've been thinking while setting up this shop. I think I've internalized a lot of the "a kid could paint it" discourse. But art doesn't need to look real to be worthwhile or beautiful. We all carry around high-definition cameras in the form of smartphones. We can photograph and realistically reproduce almost anything; we don't need paintings for that.

For me, painting is like unchoreographed dance. As a dancer might spontaneously move to the beat, I paint to my emotions in the moment.

Anyways, I hope my art speaks to you in some way. If you have any questions or are interested in my art but don't see your country listed here, please get in touch.

Dana 🥰
